Bugsu Ovunc, MD, PhD

Dr. Ovunc graduated from Hacettepe University and completed an MD/PhD program. Her postdoctoral research at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor focused on genetics. She completed clinical training at Boston Children’s Hospital and is an Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of California, Irvine.

She is active staff at Miller Children's Hospital in Long Beach and Torrance Memorial Medical Center since 2019.

She is well versed in all areas of pediatric lung diseases including asthma, chronic cough, pneumonia, respiratory distress, bronchopulmonary dysplasia due to premature birth, apnea of prematurity, chronic lung disease, congenital malformations of the lung and chest, pulmonary hypertension, tracheostomy and ventilator management, restrictive lung disease and sleep disordered breathing/apnea. She performs fiberoptic bronchoscopy and bronchioalveolar lavage (BAL) procedures. As a result of her doctorate and post-doctorate training and research in genetics, she has a special interest in rare & genetic based lung diseases such as Cystic Fibrosis (CF), Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) and Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD).

She established a Pediatric & Adult Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia Clinic at Miller Children’s Hospital & Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and led an IRB-approved project on Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) as principal investigator.

She is active in the genomics working group of Children Interstitial Lung Disease Research Network (chILD-RN).

Dr. Ovunc is on the editorial board of Pediatric Pulmonology Journal.
