When should you see an allergist?
If you or a loved one is suffering from allergies, asthma, or immune system issues, you should know that your allergist can help you avoid years of confusion, misdiagnoses, and wasted money. Before getting rid of a family pet, remodeling your house, or even moving because of an allergy fear or concern, come to an allergist to identify the culprit and come up with a personalized plan of action.
You shouldn’t have to spend money on at-home food sensitivity tests or drastically eliminate the foods you love; an allergist can help you better understand how best to interpret these results and how and when you should make dietary changes.
A food-allergy evaluation can clarify the diagnosis and support a practical avoidance and emergency plan. Anaphylaxis requires immediate emergency treatment; use prescribed epinephrine as directed and call 911.
You don’t have to suffer for months from ongoing and repeat sinus infections, come see an allergist about new non-surgical treatment options. For repeated or severe infections, come see an allergist to determine if you possibly have a problem with your immune system.

An allergist can evaluate persistent or suspected allergic conditions and explain which tests are appropriate. For diagnosed food allergy, care includes avoidance guidance and an emergency plan. Anaphylaxis is an emergency and should be treated immediately according to the patient’s action plan, including prescribed epinephrine when directed, followed by calling 911.
Persistent sinus symptoms or recurrent infections have multiple possible causes. An allergist can review the history, prior treatment, and relevant findings, then explain whether testing, medical management, referral, or monitoring is appropriate.

Define the Question Before Choosing a Test
Allergy and breathing symptoms can have overlapping causes, so the evaluation begins with timing, exposures, severity, and response to treatment. A test is most useful when its result can change a decision. Depending on the history, the clinician may recommend targeted skin or blood testing, lung-function assessment, treatment review, an observed challenge, a procedure, or no immediate testing.
For the Genesee Avenue office, send or bring the records that document the question being evaluated, including prior results and emergency notes. If a breathing test, skin test, or observed procedure is being considered, ask the office for specific medication and preparation instructions. Do not independently stop a controller inhaler or other prescribed treatment.
This information supports an efficient visit but does not replace the clinician’s individual assessment.
Planning Questions
The clinician uses the history, examination, prior results, and the decision that needs to be made to choose a focused test. A broad panel is not automatically useful, and some patients need consultation before any testing is scheduled.
Do not stop a controller inhaler or another prescribed treatment without instructions from the treating team. Call 858-260-2977 for preparation directions tied to the exact appointment or test.
Plan Your Visit
Calling or submitting an online request does not create a confirmed appointment. The office can verify scheduling, referral or authorization requirements, current insurance participation, preparation instructions, and whether a specific service is provided at this location. Benefits and patient responsibility vary by plan and are determined by the insurer; scheduling does not guarantee coverage.
Call 911 for severe trouble breathing, blue or gray lips, throat or tongue swelling, fainting, confusion, rapidly worsening symptoms, or suspected anaphylaxis. Follow the patient’s prescribed emergency action plan and use prescribed epinephrine when directed. Do not wait for a clinic callback during a medical emergency.
