You shouldn’t have to spend money on at-home food sensitivity tests or drastically eliminate the foods you love; an allergist can help you better understand how best to interpret these results and how and when you should make dietary changes.

How does an allergist decide what evaluation is appropriate?
Allergy and breathing symptoms can have overlapping causes, so the evaluation begins with timing, exposures, severity, and response to treatment. A test is most useful when its result can change a decision. Depending on the history, the clinician may recommend targeted skin or blood testing, lung-function assessment, treatment review, an observed challenge, a procedure, or no immediate testing.
