Dust Mite Allergy
Dust mites are microscopic organisms that live in household fabrics and feed on shed skin. Sensitivity can contribute to year-round nasal, eye, skin, or asthma symptoms, but a positive test matters only when it fits the clinical pattern.

Compare symptoms at home, work, school, and during travel before assuming the home is the only source.
Testing and interpretation
Targeted skin or allergen-specific IgE blood testing can show sensitization. The result is interpreted with timing, other indoor allergens, asthma history, and treatment response.

Dust mites thrive in humid environments. Repair moisture problems and use a reliable humidity measurement before adding a dehumidifier. Vacuuming with suitable filtration can reduce disturbed particles, but cleaning may temporarily increase airborne allergen; a sensitive patient may prefer to leave the room during and shortly after cleaning.
Portable HEPA cleaners capture airborne particles but do not remove mites embedded in bedding or upholstery, so filtration is one layer rather than a complete solution.

When dust mite allergy affects more than the nose
Dust mite exposure may contribute to asthma or eczema in selected sensitized patients. Night cough, wheeze, exercise limitation, sleep disruption, or frequent rescue-inhaler use should prompt an asthma review rather than relying only on nasal treatment.
If avoidance and correctly used medicines are insufficient, discuss whether the diagnosis, exposure pattern, and health history support allergen immunotherapy.
Prioritize the Sleeping Area
Dust mite measures work best as a focused, sustainable routine
Because people spend many hours in bed, the mattress, pillows, bedding, and nearby fabric reservoirs are usually the first place to focus. Encasements must fully close and remain intact. Bedding care, indoor humidity, and cleaning methods should be chosen for what the household can maintain rather than as a one-time intensive project.
Symptoms alone cannot measure mite exposure. Morning congestion, cleaning-related sneezing, eczema, or asthma may support the history, but other indoor allergens and nonallergic irritants can produce the same pattern. Testing should be interpreted with where symptoms improve or worsen, including time away from home.
Reassess after a consistent period using symptom control, sleep, medicine use, and asthma stability. If the pattern remains important despite appropriate treatment and feasible exposure reduction, immunotherapy may become part of the discussion.
