Fish Allergy
Fish allergy involves finned fish such as salmon, tuna, or cod and is different from shellfish allergy. Some people react to several species, while others may tolerate selected fish after careful evaluation.

Airborne proteins released during cooking can trigger symptoms in some highly sensitive patients, while touching fish may cause a local skin reaction without proving the same ingestion threshold.
Other fish-related illnesses can look allergic
Histamine fish poisoning can cause flushing, headache, hives-like symptoms, and gastrointestinal illness in more than one diner after spoiled fish. Parasites or foodborne infection create different patterns. These possibilities do not make a true IgE-mediated fish allergy less important, but they change the evaluation.
Emergency records, the restaurant receipt, and whether other diners became ill can help the allergist interpret the episode.

Plan for restaurants, supplements, and shared cooking
Ask about shared fryers, grills, utensils, sauces, broths, and seafood stocks. Fish ingredients may also appear in selected supplements or specialty products. Read labels rather than assuming that a product category is fish-free.
Continue the prescribed emergency plan and carry epinephrine when indicated. Decisions about trying another species belong in a supervised plan, not a restaurant experiment.

Targeted testing may help organize probability, and an allergist may consider supervised challenges to selected fish when the benefit of clarifying the diet outweighs the risk.
The written plan should separate finned fish from shellfish, identify any species known to be tolerated, and address restaurant exposure, cooking vapors for highly sensitive patients, cross-contact, and emergency medication.

Is fish allergy the same as shellfish allergy?
No. Finned fish and shellfish contain different major allergens. A reaction to one group does not by itself diagnose allergy to the other, although a person can have both.
If I reacted to one fish, must I avoid every fish?
Not automatically, but cross-reactivity is common enough that individual testing and any introduction should be planned with an allergist. Do not test another species at home after a systemic reaction.
Does iodine cause fish allergy?
No. Iodine is not the allergenic protein in fish, and fish allergy does not itself establish allergy to iodinated contrast. These histories should be recorded separately.
Does cooking make fish safe for someone with fish allergy?
Not reliably. Important fish allergens can remain after baking, grilling, frying, or canning. A tolerated species or preparation should be documented precisely, and a different form should not be tried at home after a concerning reaction.
