When to request a visit
Children and adults can request an expedited visit with an allergy and asthma care team when symptoms need timely evaluation but do not meet emergency criteria.
What the visit may include
Depending on the history and clinical findings, the visit may include vital signs, medication review, an examination, selected breathing tests, treatment, or a follow-up plan. Tests and treatments are ordered only when medically appropriate and may not all be available during every visit.

Allergy and Breathing
- Mild-to-moderate asthma worsening that is not severe and is responding to the patient’s rescue plan
- Nasal allergy or rhinitis symptoms

- Medication or allergy-plan questions
Skin and Swelling
- Hives without breathing, throat, circulatory, or rapidly progressive symptoms

- Stable localized swelling without tongue, throat, breathing, faintness, or rapid-progression symptoms

Emergency warning signs
Do not schedule a Same-Day Allergy Care visit for a possible emergency. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department for:
- trouble breathing, severe wheezing, throat tightness, or tongue or throat swelling;
- fainting, confusion, blue or gray lips, or severe weakness;
- an asthma attack that remains severe or does not improve after following the rescue action plan;
- chest pain or pressure;
- a possible severe allergic reaction or rapidly developing symptoms in more than one body system;
- a blistering or peeling rash, sores involving the eyes or mouth, or a rash with severe illness; or
- any symptom that is rapidly worsening or feels life-threatening.
What to do immediately
For suspected anaphylaxis, use prescribed epinephrine immediately according to the patient’s action plan and call 911. Antihistamines and asthma inhalers are not substitutes for epinephrine in anaphylaxis.
